The charter school, which opens August 8 as the county’s sixth, will serve 225 students through fifth grade with plans to grow.
Athenian Academy of Pasco, a Greek and Spanish language immersion school which also specializes in mathematics, opens its doors on August 8.
The academy, Pasco’s sixth charter school, will serve about 225 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The school will be run by Leona Group Florida, which operates another Athenian Academy in Dunedin. Leona Group operates 60 schools nationwide, including sites in Michigan, Ohio, Arizona, Louisiana and Indiana.
Athenian makes learning foreign languages accessible to kids throughout the county because charter schools don’t require tuition and any Pasco student can apply for admission, Rodriguez Bower said. The schools are completely funded through public school funds. Athenian has a local not-for-profit board which runs the school.
The students will have one hour of Greek a day, including 15 minutes of math concepts taught in the language. Depending on their grade level, students will study Spanish two to three times a week for 30 minutes.
There will be 11 teachers, including American, Spanish and Greek. The school plans to expand to include sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes at some point.
“We’re really excited about Pasco,” Rodriguez Bower said. “The district has been very cooperative.”
