Limassol is gearing up for its annual carnival, with the Grand Parade theme this being love.
The Carnival King, dressed as a god of love, will kick-off the carnival holding a red rose and will be accompanied by 50 young girls, all dressed in multi-coloured costumes, expressing ideas of love.
Festivities begin on February 8 (Tsiknopempti) with events organised all over the town. They include a painting exhibition set up by the Limassol Union of Self-Educated Painters at the Town Hall at 6.30pm. The Mayor of Limassol, Andreas Christou, will inaugurate the exhibition.
Sixty floats made up of different groups have been approved by Limassol Municipality’s Cultural Board, according to their cultural co-ordinator Kleona Alexandrou. Most of the floats will centre around socio-political satire and art. Competition will be rife to win the prize for the best float.
The Children’s Parade will take place a week before the main parade and will be located in the Pentadromo area on February 11 at 11.30am, ending in Anexartisias street.
The main parade will be on Sunday, February 18 and will set off from the Ayios Nicolaos roundabout at 1.30pm, ending at the Ayia Sofia traffic lights.
Events also include a carnival party at the mediaeval castle on Tuesday, February 13 at 8.30pm. Both young and old have been invited to come in fancy dress to take part in the fun. The party will also feature a carnival costume competition with prizes for the top three costumes.
People in the town are already getting into the party spirit, with shops selling costumes and many floats nearly ready.
