Under the general title “Heterotopias,” the State Museum of Contemporary Art is organizing the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, May 21 through September 30, 2007.

More than 160 artists from all over the world will be featured in several exhibitions in 26 different sites throughout the city of Thessaloniki. A full program of the exhibits, openings, exhibition spaces, and times is available at www.thessalonikibiennale.gr.

The title of the Biennale is borrowed from a lecture by Michel Foucault, who referred to real spaces, or islets, where people follow specific rules that make them feel out of tune with their daily life. The exhibitions will highlight contemporary Heterotopias and juxtapose the real and the virtual worlds, with a view to the new spaces of the future.

The 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art will also feature a series of seminars, discussions, educational programs, and parallel activities, such as film screenings and performances.
