The spirit of the Mediterranean will come alive this weekend at St. George Greek Orthodox Church when the parish hosts its 27th annual Greek festival.

The festival will include nine amusement rides, games, arts and crafts, authentic Greek food, pastries, music and dancers in traditional costume. It begins today and ends Sunday at the 238 West Rocks Road church.

“It’s a family event,” said the Rev. Nick Dassouras, church pastor. “There will be fun times, and you can definitely educate yourself about different traditions and cultures.”

The church will be open throughout the festival for visitors to look around. Vendors will sell religious icons, art and jewelry. A ceremony from 7:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow will open the weekend festivities, with several elected officials expected, Dassouras said.

Chris Bellos, who is heading the festival efforts, said proceeds will go to the parish. “We are trying to keep with tradition and open the community to anyone and everyone,” Bellos said.
