Growth in Greece’s manufacturing sector accelerated in February with the purchasing managers’ index (PMI) rising to 52.4 points from 51.4 in January, a monthly survey showed yesterday.
The 50 mark separates contraction from growth. The PMI provides a snapshot of operating conditions in manufacturing.
“Greek manufacturers expanded production at their plants in February, underpinned by further growth of incoming new business,” NTC Research said. “The rate of increase in output was robust and the strongest for three months.”

Work to regenerate the site around Ancient Olympia, charred in last summer’s fires, is virtually complete, Culture Minister Michalis Liapis said yesterday following a tour of the site.
“We are ready to receive the Chinese delegation, to hand over the flame in a simple and solemn ceremony,” said Liapis, referring to the lighting of the Olympic Torch for the Beijing Games, due later this month.
The site has been rejuvenated with more than 36,000 plants, with another 2,000 still to be planted. The Hill of Cronus, which bore the brunt of the fire damage, has been replanted. Also, the area around the monument to Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, has been spruced up.
“A miracle has been performed upon the hell left behind in August,” said Minos Kyriakou, the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

The City of Athens yesterday started operating a van that will travel parts of the capital to inform residents of municipal projects and to record problems in different areas.
“The new mobile information booth is the first of its kind in Greece and will operate as a tool for consultation and dialogue with Athenians,” said Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis. The van’s first stop will be in Votanikos and on Alexandras Avenue, while between April and June it will visit seven different city districts.
