This Greek girl makes a mean sauce July 22, 2006

I’ve been fortunate to meet so many wonderful people during the past years.

One such individual holds a very special place in my heart. Her name is Sophia Aggelonitis, of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, and she’s the nicest, most sincere, honest and hard-working person I know.

A few years back, Sophia, who has an infectious personality, found herself without a job after being unceremoniously dumped by a local landfill company. I had dealt with Sophia on many occasions and always found her to be a professional, dedicated and loyal person.

When I first found out she was let go, just a few weeks before Christmas I might add (how classy), I called her and said, “This is the best thing that could ever happen to you.”

At the time I’m not sure Sophia felt the same way I did, but in my mind, a person of this character didn’t belong in a company that has back-handed their local community over and over again for more than a decade.

So off Sophia went back out into the world of uncertainty. After a few months of reflection, this proud Hamilton Mountain resident decided to take matters into her own hands and start a sauce company. It was a big risk.

That same year, Sauces By Sophia was born with the launch of the Soon to be Famous Tzatziki Sauce and Dip.

Over the past two years, Sophia has worked harder than anyone I know to develop her business. This included hours and hours of time doing customer samples, driving around delivering boxes of her sauce to area stores, as well as continuing all her community involvement commitments.

In addition, she took over management duties at the Hamilton Club (the first female manager in the history of this prestigious club), and next year will become president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.

Earlier this week, my dear friend Sophia added six new sauces to her growing empire. Aside from the delicious original Tzatziki sauce, you can now enjoy Roasted Sweet Potato, Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Garlic and Cream Cheese, Eggplant, Black Bean and Spicy Hummus.

These new sauces are now available at many area stores, and let me tell you this – they are absolutely the best sauces and dip on the market.

That may sound biased, but I love sauces and dips, especially ones with loads of garlic (yummy). And all the new sauces will satisfy garlic lovers everywhere.

I have also met Sophia’s parents, who have operated one of the most popular restaurants in Welland – The Fireside on Southworks — for many decades. The quality of the food served at this restaurant is second to none. Sophia’s parents work tirelessly six days a week to prepare and serve delicious meals for their loyal customers.

What separates Sophia’s sauces from mainstream brands is the fact she uses only fresh ingredients with no preservatives. All the recipes come from her family’s archives, and as Sophia will tell you, “They are all mother-approved.”

The recipe for Sophia’s Soon to be Famous Tzatziki Sauce and Dip is a family secret, and one that I had the pleasure of tasting long before it found its way to local grocery store shelves.

If you know Sophia, I’m sure you would agree this woman has it all – smart, beautiful, courageous, giving, honest, compassionate (I could go on). But most of all, she has an entrepreneurial spirit that I appreciate. And she loves Hamilton and is proud to call this community home.

She has taken a lot of risks in launching this type of business. Look at any supermarket store shelves and you will find numerous sauces made by different companies. The sauce business is highly competitive, but I have yet to find one single sauce or dip that tastes as good as Sophia’s. That’s because she will not compromise on quality, and is committed to making the best damn sauces and dips in the world.

This is a local success story in the making, and I hope that you will try one of Sophia’s Soon to be Famous sauces and dips the next time you are in the store.

Her sauces are available locally at The Barn, Zarky’s, Denninger’s, Goodness Me, Picone’s and many more. For a full listing of stores and more about Sauces by Sophia, visit www.saucesbysophia.com.

Congratulations Sophia!
