Russia’s Marat Safin provided the last upset of the day, putting out Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, the number nine seed, 6-4, 6-3.

The 2004 champion, who looked in imperious form on his way to a three-set win over the awkward Argentinian Jose Acasuso in round one, was keenly focused again as Baghdatis, the winner of the Beijing International last month, barely got a look in.

Safin himself had reached the final of the Moscow international last week, only to be beaten by compatriot Nikolay Davydenko in three sets, and is clearly approaching his best as the season draws to a close.

The former US and Australian Open champion will next play Belgium’s Kristof Vliegen, who put out the American number eight seed James Blake earlier in the day.
