Billy Sgouros brings an end to Saturdays challenge on Epiphany Day BOY BATTLE > Billy Sgouros brings an end to Saturdays challenge during Epiphany Day Celebrations

Sixteen-year-old Billy Sgouros might just be going for a hat trick after he won the Greek community’s traditional Throwing of the Cross for the second time on Saturday.

In front of a crowd of more than a hundred, the victorious Billy emerged from the water at the Bay’s CBD wharf, in the light morning, slightly bloodied but smiling.

For the second year in a row, Billy will enjoy 12 months of good luck after he once again beat several other Greek youths to retrieve a cross from the Clyde as part of the annual Epiphany Day celebrations. The cross was first blessed by a Greek Orthodox priest before it was thrown into the Clyde.

Last year, Billy said “once is enough” but it appears the lure of the blessing was too strong. “I didn’t really think I’d win,” he said. “It’s good just to jump in – whether you win or lose.”

It’s a ceremony that’s not without risk, this year blood flowed from a cut on his foot, while last year he suffered a minor gash to his hand. The Epiphany Day celebrations are held each year to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ on January 6th.
