Fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus struggled past rookie Matthias Bachinger of Germany 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of the BMW Open in Munich, Germany.

Baghdatis, a 2006 Australian Open finalist, delayed play for five minutes arguing calls after he dropped the first set to a 20-year-old German player making his ATP tour debut.

Third-seeded Mikhail Youzhny joined Baghdatis in the quarter-finals, a day after top-seeded German Tommy Haas was beaten and No. 7 Guillermo Canas retired from his match with abdominal muscle problems.

Youzhny beat Germany’s Benjamin Becker 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), and Alexander Waske advanced by downing Daniel Brands 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Eighth-seeded Juergen Melzer beat Raeomon Sluiter 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
