The exhibition at the Hellenic House gave people in Beijing a preview of the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. The Museum was constructed to house the famous exhibits from the site of the Acropolis, Athens’ most famous landmark. Visitors are able to see cast copies of the west frieze of the Acropolis, as well as the Parthenon, and a photographic presentation of the New Acropolis Museum.

There’s also a scale model of the Museum’s “Parthenon Gallery”. The Gallery will house the original blocks of the frieze and other elements of the architectural decoration of the Parthenon. The new Museum in Athens will be fully opened by late 2008.

Another remarkable event this week debuts a contemporary adaptation of an ancient comedy, by Aristophanes. “The Birds”, is to open at Beijing’s National Grand Theatre.

The Birds originally was staged nearly 25 hundred years ago, shaping a Utopian ideal of a city comprised of men and birds. The contemporary adaptation, staged for the first time 47 years ago is considered a digest of modern Greek culture and a benchmark in modern Greek cultural history. It is considered the most successful post-war Greek drama to travel the world.

Greek Minister of Culture Mihalis Liapis attended the press conference announcing the events. The Minister said, “During the exhibition, I will promote an agreement with my Chinese colleagues to prevent the smuggling of cultural relics. I know both China and Greece have suffered inestimable losses from smuggling. As for the “Birds”, I believe Chinese the audience will love it. It is a masterpiece beyond time and space. We hope to showcase not only the ancient history and culture of Greece, but also it’s modern life. And you will find it all in the year of culture.”

The Greek Minister of Culture also noted that lighting ceremony for the Olympic flame for the Beijing Olympic Games will be gathered at Olympia, Greece, on March 24. Preparations already are in place.

The poor services offered by several private telecommunication companies that compete with OTE state telecom [Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation – OTE] have created problems for some 800,000 households across Greece.

The problems can often be attributed to the immaturity of the local market but, unfortunately, more often seem to derive from the dubious tactics by certain companies to advertise services they cannot provide for in a credible manner.

Greek consumers are not interested in the reasons behind their distress. They only want these problems to go away – and rightly so.

One hopes that the responsible authorities, including the Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT), the general consumer secretariat and the consumer ombudsman will live up to their duties and take measures to punish any opportunistic firms that seek to exploit the deregulation of the market by creating problems for consumers.

The Longsands set for live gig in Greece March 2, 2008

Cramlington indie-rock band The Longsands have been smashing up plates instead of hotel rooms as they increase their fan base in Greece. The Longsands have been playing dates with one of Greece’s biggest acts, Matisse, who have supported the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs, Garbage and Marylin Manson.

The Longsands successfully released two singles in 2007, completed a UK tour, played a sell out gig at The Sage Gateshead for the launch of their second single, recorded a track for Newcastle United, and now they are looking for fresh new ways to show case their phenomenal sound to new audiences across the world.

Ian Barnes, guitarist and songwriter for The Longsands, said: “Everybody wants to be signed and recognised as an artist straight away but these days talent alone is not enough in the UK. You need to prove that you can sell out the best venues, make a stamp on the national press and radio and be almost a finished article ready for the labels to sell quickly and make their money. More so now than ever the UK music scene is monopolised by ‘flash in the pan’ bands who will be forgotten tomorrow. We have sold out big tour venues, sold thousands of CDs, and more importantly have songs that we believe can stand the test of time, but like every other artist we need one special platform that will separate us from the rest. We firmly believe that we have an opportunity in Greece to play to a totally different industry and hopefully turn a few heads in the UK as well.”

The Longsands have already had radio play on the continent and have been in contact with representatives from Sony BMG Greece who are scheduled to catch the band in Athens on the last night of the tour.

Italy’s Enel SpA has won a bid to build a 447 megawatt power plant in Greece, the Greek state transmission system operator said Thursday.

The license for the gas-fired plant is the first issued by the Hellenic Transmission System Operator, under a complex guarantee system aimed at bringing new investment into the Greek power market.

The cost of the project was not announced. Enel has said it proposes to invest between €500 million ($756 million) and €1 billion ($1.5 billion) in Greece until 2011.
