54th BP Ultimate Acropolis Rally > a preview May 28, 2007

Special stages twisting through the Greek mountains, blistering heat and hot dust. For many, the Acropolis Rally is the highlight of the season.

“This rally is definitely one of the toughest on the calendar,” says Andreas Aigner. And wants to show that he’s one of the toughest in the field.

The rally teams will gather in Greece in early summer for the 54th time to run the BP Ultimate Acropolis Rally between the Parthenon and Metora Monasteries. The rally begins and ends with a super special in Athens. In between are 20 gravel special stages through the Greek mountains. Above all, the stirred up dust, the rocks hurled up by the car and the heat that can get up to 50 °C place huge demands on driver and equipment, some teams even bring cars with extra-fortified chassis with them.

For the Red Bull Rally team it will be their fourth race in the P-WRC. In the last race in Argentina Andreas Aigner and co-pilot Klaus Wicha made seventh place and scored the first P-WRC points. In Greece, their chances of continuing their upward trend don’t look bad. In contrast to the Argentinean ones, Andreas Aigner is already acquainted with the Greek special stages from last year.

Because the P-WRC overall ranking is no longer an issue, the team is fully focussed on the attack. “For Greece I intend to stay really relaxed but also to find rhythm and good movement,” said Aigner. Andreas will probably be hoping for a somewhat more boring race compared to last year, where he made 14th place after a half rollover and a whole lot of flat tyres.

Cyprus will hold a historic car rally this weekend on the scenic Mediterranean island with the participation of 72 old cars.

The 19th International Historic Car Rally, or the 2nd Historic Cyprus Rally, is organised by the Cyprus Automobile Association (CAA). It is included in the calendar of the International Federation of Ancient Vehicles (FIVA) and the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

A total of 72 old cars manufactured before 1982, with the oldest Ford model A made in 1931, will roll for the three-day regularity rally from May 25, covering 500 kilometers with 18 timecontrol points divided into three legs.

Petros Demetriades, a spokesman of the CAA, said that foreign participants from Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Sweden, Britain and America will join local drivers in the rally.

The rally will start in capital Nicosia on Friday afternoon. The participants will drive their historic cars to coastal towns of Larnaca, Paphos and Limassol. They will be back to Nicosia on Sunday.

Duval and First ready for Greece May 16, 2007

Francois Duval looks almost certain to compete on the Acropolis Rally in two weeks time, after First Motorsport confirmed that they have resolved the issues which have delayed their programme until now.

A statement from the Belgian squad explained that team boss Willy Collignon has been working since mid-April to sort things out after Skoda sold the Fabia WRC cars they were trying to acquire to Wevers Sport.

First have now secured three Fabia World Rally Cars though and are now on course to begin their season in two weeks time, albeit somewhat later than hoped.

Although Duval will not compete on the Rally d’Italia Sardegna this weekend, the third time this year he has had to pull out after lodging an entry, he is due to start testing next week. Indeed a two-day programme has been planned in the south France, prior to the event in Greece the following week.

Duval told his personal website on Monday meanwhile that the reason he won’t compete in Sardinia is because the three Fabia World Rally Cars have arrived late and because First Motorsport want to give him time to test and get use to new co-driver, Jean Francois Elst. The decision to skip Sardinia has apparently been taken ‘unanimously’ by the whole of the team, its pilots and its partners.

Inferiority complex? Who, me?

smartcars.jpg  Designed by Greek 4×4 champion Stefan Attart together with Mercedes-Benz Greece, the forfun² looks more like a kid’s plaything than something you’d actually be able to manoeuvre over rocky landscapes. But this is precisely what it’s been masterminded to do.

Unimog engine and transmission aside, the super-sized vehicle flashes oversized tyres with 26-inch rims, a six-cylinder diesel engine and a ground clearance of 2ft. It’s also fitted with an aluminium safety cage and special shock absorbers with manually controlled air suspension for tackling steep downhill slopes.

But the fact that you’ll need a step ladder to hop aboard isn’t the only thing stopping you getting behind the driver’s seat of this baby: the forfun² is a one-off. Smart’s more traditional range is available over at www.smart.com/uk or visit http://www1.smart.com, http://www.daimlerchrysler.com

Rebeaud and his colleagues had performed stunts at the old airport in Hellenikon the previous day, using a Jumbo jet as a prop for their display. Rebeaud became the first European to win the international freestyle motocross competition, known as the Red Bull X-fighters, in Mexico City last year. He will be defending his title at Slaine Castle in Ireland on May 26.
