Greece’s Aegean Airlines to launch summer service to London February 7, 2008

Aegean Airlines said yesterday it will launch flights to London this summer, expanding its destinations abroad with new Airbus A321 jets.

Flights to London’s Stansted, twice daily, will start on May 15, the carrier said. Aegean will also launch a service to Tirana, Albania’s capital, from May 2.

Its domestic network will expand with new flights to the islands of Lemnos and Cephalonia.

Aegean expects to take delivery of 10 Airbus A320/321 aircraft as part of its investment program, which targets a fleet renewal with 25 new aircraft by 2010. The Airbus jets will replace 15 Boeing 737 planes. Aegean’s passenger traffic last year grew 18 percent, to 5.23 million passengers.

Hermes Airports Ltd recorded another strong month in October for passenger traffic at Larnaka and Pafos International Airports.

Nearly 776,000 passengers travelled through the two airports in October 2007, a 3.94% increase on October 2006. At Larnaka International Airport, passenger traffic increased by 5.27% on October 2006, with over 565,000 passengers. At Pafos International Airport, passenger traffic increased by 0.54%, with over 210,000 passengers. Passenger traffic for the year to date is also up 3.59% on 2006 levels.

Jenni Fernando, Marketing Manager for Hermes Airports Ltd, said “October was another good month for passenger traffic at both airports as we approach the end of the summer season.”

Spanish low-cost airline Clickair has started three weekly flights between Athens and Barcelona.

Its flights will be every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, with fares starting at 40 euros. Bookings are made through travel agents or the carrier’s website, www.clickair.com, which is in seven languages. The company is partly owned by Spain’s national carrier, Iberia.

Greece’s Olympic Airlines is expanding its flight schedule to the Balkan capitals of Bucharest, Sofia and Belgrade, raising the total number of services per week to 46 from 41 on the schedule until March 29.

It also has added two weekly flights from Athens to Dubai, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

EasyJet could begin flying to Cyprus from April next year after the low-cost carrier bought out GB Airways, which operates flights to the island.

Under the deal, GB Airways will continue to fly under its own name until March 29, after which all flights will be carried out under the ‘easy’ brand.

However, easyJet flights to Cyprus are not a certainty. A spokeswoman for the group said: “GB airways will continue to operate business as usual until March 29, 2008, after this date the operation will continue under the easyJet brand with easyJet terms and conditions. It will not be until this time the airline will be in a position to make decisions about specific routes. However, easyJet will contact all passengers due to travel after March 29 to advise if there are any changes.”

Until now, easyJet has avoided flights to Cyprus, despite the Cypriot origins of the airline’s founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou. Late last year, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation had been negotiating with easyJet and another low-cost carrier to bring more no-frills airline to Cyprus. Low-cost carriers have been difficult to attract, due to the distance from the UK, as they usually operate within a three-hour time frame and Cyprus is some four and a half hours flying time from Britain.

A statement from easyJet said its acquisition of GB Airways was consistent with the airline’s expansion strategy and strengthened its customer offering at Gatwick, the airline’s biggest base. Following the acquisition for £103.5 million, easyJet will operate 24 per cent of Gatwick’s slots and will fly approximately 8 million passengers across 62 routes from Gatwick.

GB Airways is primarily a London Gatwick based point-to-point airline operating to destinations across Southern Europe and North Africa under a franchise agreement with British Airways.

EasyJet said that by Winter 2008/09, GB Airways would be fully consolidated into the easyJet business model. Andy Harrison, Chief Executive of easyJet, said: “This is an acquisition which both strengthens our customer offering at London Gatwick, our biggest base with an attractive catchment area, and allows us to fully capitalise on the potential of the airport through a larger number of slots. The deal will bring major benefits to both easyJet and GB Airways customers, delivering a wider choice of destinations at easyJet’s great prices, and creating clear value for our shareholders.”

EasyJet acquires GB Airways, which serves airports in Greece

UK-based budget airline easyJet announced yesterday the acquisition of GB Airways Ltd, a franchise partner of British Airways Plc, for 103.5 million pounds (147.8 million euros), excluding GB’s slots at Heathrow Airport.

Owned by Greek-Cypriot tycoon Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, easyJet will cooperate with British Airways for a smooth transition, with full integration of Gatwick-based GB into easyJet expected from March 30, when all GB services will be under easyJet colors.

GB this season operates flights to four Greek destinations: Corfu, Myconos, Iraklion and Rhodes, while easyJet flies to Athens.

Over 840,000 passengers travelled through Cyprus’ two airports in September 2007, an 11.36% increase on September 2006, reported airports operator Hermes Airports Ltd.

At Larnaka International Airport, passenger traffic increased by 14.24% on September 2006, with nearly 630,000 passengers. At Pafos International Airport, passenger traffic increased by 3.64%, with over 210,000 passengers. Passenger traffic for the year to date is also up 3.54% on 2006 levels.

We remain committed to the further improvement of the services that we offer at our existing airports at both Pafos and Larnaka, until the opening of the new terminals in 2008 and 2009, respectively”.

Hermes Airports Ltd assumed management of Larnaka and Pafos International Airports in May 2006, under a 25 year concession agreement with the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. As part of a 622 million euros investment programme, new passenger terminals will open at Pafos International Airport in November 2008, and at Larnaka International Airport in November 2009, in addition to significant upgrading of existing passenger terminals.

Hermes Airports Ltd is an international consortium of 9 shareholders, bringing local and international expertise to the project. The shareholders are Bouygues Batiment International (22%), Egis Projects (20%), Cyprus Trading Corporation Public Limited (11.34%), Hellenic Mining (11.33%), Vancouver Airport Services (11%), Aer Rianta International (11%), Iacovou Brothers Construction (5.665%), Charilaos Apostolides Public Limited (5.665%) and Aeroport Nice Cote d’ Azur Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie (2%).
