For the seventh consecutive fashion season, the Hellenic Fashion Designers’ Association (HFD) organized the Athens Collections InStyle, Greek fashion week. On the international front, buyers were expected from Italy, France, the Netherlands and Turkey as well as from Harvey Nichols Hong Kong.

Greece’s Folli-Follie rising profits March 13, 2008

Jewelry and accessories retailer Folli-Follie said yesterday profits rose 12 percent in 2007 after it gained control of Elmec Sport in October.
Net income increased to 72.7 million euros from 65.2 million in 2006, on sales growth of 46 percent to 706.2 million euros. Japan and other Asian nations accounted for 62 percent of total sales last year.
Folli-Follie owns Greek airport retailer Hellenic Duty Free Shops, which said separately net income reached 33.5 million euros last year as sales advanced 38 percent to 414 million. Elmec Sport, which is 94 percent-owned by Hellenic Duty Free, had net income of 14.2 million euros last year, according to the statement.

Greece’s market watchdog investigates price increases March 4, 2008

The Greek Competition Commission is planning to investigate increases in prices of basic foodstuffs and other consumer products over the last three years.
The independent authority wants to establish whether the price hikes have been the result of the relationships between industrial and commercial companies on the one side and supermarket chains on the other.
More than 20 companies have been targeted for the supply of data, coming from the sectors of bakery products, dairy products, paper items, ready meals, wine etc. By the end of the month, the commission will have a full picture on the washing detergent sector.
Shoppers to get own price lists February 25, 2008

Consumers will be able to go shopping next month armed with a price list for the 50 most commonly bought items, in a move aimed at helping shoppers better identify retailers who unfairly inflate their prices.
The Development Ministry will put together the daily list in an attempt to better inform consumers as some 30 companies have hiked prices by up to 15 percent since the start of the year. The move is aimed at helping fight Greece’s rising inflation, which remains one of the highest in the eurozone, at just below 4 percent last month.
In the event of companies going overboard with their price hikes or fiddling with price data handed to the Development Ministry, the offenders will be put on a black list that will then be published, according to the Ministry.
In the next few weeks, the Ministry also plans to prepare a list of goods comparing prices available in Greece with those offered in other European cities.
Fnac to open new outlet in Athens in April February 12, 2008

French retailer Fnac is preparing its second outlet in Athens and making plans for a third while looking for premises in Thessaloniki, with a view to eventually creating eight to 10 stores across Greece.
The new outlet in Athens will open in Glyfada in early April in a four-story building with a total surface of 2,000 square meters, an investment of 3 million euros.
According to estimates by Fnac’s management, the new outlet will have balanced books after only its first nine months. In the first three years its turnover will be an estimated 12 to 15 million euros. It will sell books, CDs, DVDs and other audio-visual products as well as mobile telephony and information technology products.
“The area of Glyfada is an important commercial location serving more than 15 municipalities and covering a population that exceeds 600,000,” said Patrick Salomon, general director of Fnac Greece.
The first outlet of Fnac, at The Mall Athens, has annual profits of 300,000 to 400,000 euros, while in 2008 its profits are expected to reach 1 million, added Salomon. The store opened in 2005 and in 2006 its turnover reached 16.6 million, before rising by 15 percent last year.
The company is also seeking to lease a building on Kolokotroni Street in central Athens, through a tender process that began last December. The building used to house the now defunct local branch of Habitat. After Athens and Thessaloniki, Fnac is also setting its sights on some other Greek cities as well as Cyprus for further expansion.
City of Athens launches campaign to turn off plastic bags February 11, 2008

Greece’s top supermarket chains and the City of Athens launched Monday a campaign to turn shoppers off plastic bags, some 2.5 billion of which are used nationwide each year.
“We need to persuade people to stop using plastic bags,” Christophoros Giokas, general sales manager at Greek chain My Market, told reporters. “We frequently see shoppers taking five spare bags home.”
Nine chains, AB Vassilopoulos, Atlantic, Veropoulos, Bazaar, Galaxias, Carrefour Marinopoulos, Dia Hellas, My Market Metro, and Sklavenitis, signed a memorandum with Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis to provide reusable and environment-friendly bags on a two-month trial ran starting April 14.
The measure will begin in earnest on June 1 along with efforts to expand it to the rest of the country, Kaklamanis told a news conference. Around 40 percent of Greece’s 11 million people live in Athens, where increasing levels of domestic waste are being generated, the memorandum said.
Plastic bags end up in hundreds of unofficial or substandard landfills around the country that are a major headache for Greek authorities, but also pose a threat to river and marine wildlife. Ninety-eight percent of European sea birds have pieces of plastic in their stomachs, the memorandum said.
The European Union has repeatedly expressed alarm over the disposal of environmentally-hazardous waste at these sites, and Greece is often singled out by both the EU and environmental groups such as Greenpeace and WWF for failing to enforce even its own environmental legislation. Only around 20 percent of waste generated in the country is recycled, the Greek environment ministry said in July.
